Political Education Fund

The political education fund is kept by the Authority following each state general election and runs over a 4 year cycle from state election to state election. Funding for political education is only available to eligible registered political parties.

In order to be eligible to receive annual payments from the fund a registered political party must meet the following criteria:

  1. the party must have endorsed candidates for the Legislative Assembly at the 2007 state general election, and
  2. the party must have been entitled to receive funding in respect of the 2007 state general election.

Annual payments are determined as at 1 January in each year following the 2007 state general election. Annual payments are made to eligible parties between 1 January and 30 June in each year.

The annual payment to a registered party is determined using a formula that is prescribed in the Election Funding and Disclousres Act 1981 and is as follows:

P = CS x FPV

where:

  • P represents the payment to the party for the year concerned.
  • CS represents the cost of a postage stamp needed to post a standard postal article by ordinary post in Sydney to an address in Sydney.
  • FPV represents the total number of first preference votes recorded at the last state general election, on all formal ballot papers for the candidates endorsed by the party for election to the Legislative Assembly.

Things you should know:

  • Parties must make a claim for payment between 1 January and 30 June in order to receive a payment for that year.
  • Payments from the political education fund must be spent in accordance with the Election Funding and Diclosures Act 1981 and the political education fund determinations.
  • A claim must be accompanied by a declaration stating how the previous payment was spent by the party and that the payment was spent in accordance with the Authority's determinations.
  • A claim for payment must be audited.
